Hey guys,

Thought some of you might be interested in a blog I have started up on life of my friend's father, Erskine Morris, who was an old time fiddler from the Gaspé. We have a bunch of recordings of his playing that we will be posting as well as anecdotes, pictures, and whatever else we can think of.

The site is:

http://gaspefiddle.blogspot.com/

He played some pretty incredible stuff, mostly just fiddle and clogging with his feet. Many of these are tunes that are almost certainly local to the Gaspé. Myself and Erskine's son are working to preserve this music. All the music you you can stream or download from the blog.

Feel free to subscribe using GoogleReader or any other aggregator. We will be posting something once or twice a week. Comments on the blog are welcome!

Cheers,

Glenn

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone out there in the Gaspe has video footage or pictures of the 1984 Wakeham Homecoming. I'm working with my friend whose dad was a fiddler from Douglastown. We are doing a project about his life, music, and the culture he grew up in. His name was Erskine Morris. His son reckons there was probably someone with a camera present and if so, there is a chance there is footage with the father and son playing fiddle and guitar there. Also, if anyone knew Erskine, has photos, videso, tapes, stories, etc. I would love to hear from you.

Please feel free to pass this request on to friends and family,

Thanks for your help,

Glenn

This is the first letter from Liz Ballins who with her friend Theresa Joseph, both retired nurses from Pointe Ste. Pierre, currently in Uganda.

We are having a fantastic time here in Uganda. So great I don't know where to begin. My sister Bridget and John decided that we ought to spend the winter with them, not rent a place nearby! as not having a car would have made it too difficult. Their house on a clear day has a good view of Lake Victoria,..Bridge has worked hard in the garden and in less than a year it looks lovely. The monkeys come for the ripening bananas that Bridge planted last year and also the mangoes. This morning a vervet monkey was checking his reflection in our bedrroom window inches from my bed!

When we arrived Mama guinea was sitting on eggs, unfortunately they hatched on a rainy day when we were on safari and so several died right away and then a hawk made lunch of several more, Now the remaining 2 chicks are about 12 days old and are in a run that we made before Christmas. Only 2 chicks but as Theresa optimistically points out 'twice as many as last year!'

Before Christmas Theresa and I helped Bridge and the EWA ladies (Entebbe Womens Association) with their Christmas party for orphans and vulnerable children living not too far away. This entailed Bridge going to their village and piling them all into her SUV. There was one other vehicle so 2 trips and everyone had arrived. I was amazed at their cheery singing and grateful little hearts. There were 60 in all. The EWA ladies had cooked up traditional food, Matoke (unripe banana, posho (cooked cornmeal) beans, cabbage dodo (Ugandan spinach )and for a treat chicken. After the feast we played games and before piling the children back into the cars to go back to their village gave each a plastic bowl, and cup filled with candy. They all bobbed their little curtsies and were so happy with their special day.

On Christmas day we were 12 for dinner here, with 3 cooks in the kitcken, (Bridge, Theresa and I) and preparation the day before it was not much work at all. We made it a real English Chrristmas with crackers and plum pudding (compliments of Gracie!...thanks again Gracie)...yes, we carried cranberry sauce, mincemeat etc. from Canada!!
We had a lovely time and encouraged all the guests to be gone by 8pm in order to get an early start on Boxing day.

Bridge and John had planned an 8 day safari. Our first stop though being at a rural village where we are sponsoring 10 orphans. We'd been to market and bought the boys ,T' shirts and girls dresses or skirts as well as age appropriate Ugandan story books , math review books etc, skipping ropes and soccer ball.(We wanted the kids to review their reading and math before returning to school for the new school year)..we put them all in boarding school, $100:00 /term. This way they get one hot meal a day and don't have to walk miles looking for wood for cooking etc. We felt bad that we hadn't bought clothes for the 12 or so other children anyway we did have candy for everyone...The children were so shy..we'd wrapped the gifts and they weren't sure about opening the packages!! all the clothes fit! and before leaving they insisted on us taking a big bag of mangoes from their tree. They have so little but are very generous with what they have.
Stephen Lewis Fdn has helped them build a water tank and given them goats and chickens which are already bringing in a little income for them. We have so much in Canada, and there is so much poverty here.Uganda's population is 30million..if every Canadian family helped one Ugandan family their lives would be dramatically changed.

After seeing our sponsored kids we continued along dusty, dreadfully bumpy roads to our first camp. The thatched cottages were on a hillside all hidden so you felt like you were alone, with a verandah looking over the National Park. We went game drives morning and evening and saw all kinds of antelope... zebra, topi, impala, ealand etc. and a few buffalo + all sorts of birds and eagles. Bridget is an avid 'birder' and we had to stop for every possible new species.!! Back at camp there was a pool, Uganda is on the Equator and it gets quite hot!...better not complain with you at -10C !! ha!ha! After 2 nights at Mahingo Lodge we continued to Inshasha Wilderness Camp.

Inshasha camp was right on the river..this time it was a tented camp, with indoor loo for nighttime. Our instructions for the night were to .." only blow the whistle for illness or ants" (If an army of Soldier ants walks through your tent and you can't get away, they make short work of you!!...I knew that from when I was a child. ( Remember I lived in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) ..an African prisoner was yelling and carrying on in his cell and noone went to check and in the morning only bones were left!...If we heard hippo walking around or lions or leopard to stay in the tent and do nothing!!..no way were we to leave the tent after our chaperone had left us safely there...there were coleman lanterns along all the pathways and really it was very safe. One night a leopard woke me early in the morning with his roaring..I was told that he was having an argument with some baboons! Theresa and I saw our first colubus (black and white ) monkeys when were having our early morning tea outside our tent before our early morning game drive. Inshasha was great for animals . We saw a leopard sleepinng in a tree within a few minutes of entering the park...but did notget a good photo as it was a little too far away and you can get fined $150:00 for leaving the trail unless you are with a park warden. We saw ellies, again not too close, but with my new camera took some good pictures, a big herd of buffalo were crossing the road and another group wallowing in the mud! On an afternoon drive with warden we saw 3 lion, one sleeping in one tree and 2 in another. These lions like to check out what's for dinner from the vantage of a tree top, big old fig trees they like best!..this time we got several good photos. On another afternoon walk, the warden took us along the river and we encountered a huge huddle of hippos cooling off in the river. Mostly they stay in the water during the day and come out to munch on grass at night.
The dining room was set up along the river bank with a good view of the river...yellow and black weaver birds were busy with their nest building..hundreds of nests in one tree so they are aptly called Village weavers!

After 3 nights at Inshasha we continued to Ndali lodge. I will never again complain about our roads..it was a good thing we had a proper 4 wheel drive and new tires! the roads were mostly uneven tracks with rocks everywhere. On the drive to Ndali we first saw a huge troup of baboons hogging the road and not in any hurry to make way for us. I, with my camera always handy took some sweet photos of them with their babies riding piggy-back.....Then turning another corner John had to jam on anchors as a herd of cow ellies were in the middle of the road nursing their babies... a car came from the other direction and the Mama ellies were not pleased at being hemmed in..they were trumpeting and flapping their ears at us. Bridget was in front..."John reverse up, I said reverse , reverse NOW!" actually it was a bit scary, but amazibg to see them so close, especially the little ones having a mid-morning snack!

Ndali lodge was built on the top of an old crater and definitely worth the hairraising drive. The cottages with their thatched roofs , and the old fashioned hot water system (44gallon drum over a wood fire) was exactly the way we heated our water on our farm (Arcadia-Paradise). Even the dogs came and curled up under our table when we were having early morning tea on the cottage verandah. I almost shed a tear with all the memories that came flooding back. There were 2 views from the top of the crater. On the breakfast verandah we overlooked a beautiful crater lake and the swimmingpool side had a lovely view of Ugandan smallholdings growing matoke, corn, cassava tea etc.with the Rwenzori mountains in the distance. On New year's Eve we were 20 guests with Aubrey the owner and his Ugandan wife, Clare....many corners of the globe were represented, hailing from Russia, Italy, Sweden, England and of course Canada. Aubreys grandfather owned the property years ago, but when Idi Amin kicked all the foreigners out he had to leave. The present president Museveni invited all the Asians and everyone who still had deeds to their land back. Now tourism is booming and the Asians are back setting up businesses too. We all sat at one long table and had dinner by candlelight just like when I was a child! and back in the cottage we had a coleman lantern which we left in the bathroom for some light during the night.(Much of rural Uganda still is without electricity)After 2 relaxing days at Ndali we came back to Entebbe.

This past wednesday at EWA we brought about 10 orphan children to EWA for the day and gave them one on one math, English, Social studies and Religon review. The govt puts out "holiday" package so the children can review and not forget everything during the long Christmas break. Well, we didn't study all day some of the kids were quite young ...I had Sadik a 9 year old Muslim boy I was suprised at how well he read.In the afternoon we played games that involved remebering new words and learning to spell them.

When Bridget took the kids back to the village she found one of their aunties (Margaret) lying on a mat in the hut. She had fallen, and was c/o awful pain around her ankle.....So instead of being home by 5p.m. as planned, she spent another 4 hours getting her admitted to the local Catholic mission hospital. By the time the paper work was done, Amos the x-ray tech had gone home. ...Boy, we'd better not complain about our health services. Each patient must have their own attendant, who brings food, washing up bowl and bedding!...So back to Margaret's hut to collect Irene 15years and supplies!....Next morning (THurs) the 3 musketeers and an EWA interpreter Shallon went back out to the hospital ...To cut a long story short the xray was done that day..and Margaret had a fractued fibula. The doc set it on Friday. We thought she'd be ready for discharge Sat. afternoon! BUT we had to get the crutches and all the suppliers were closed for the weekend.!!!.... health care is not free like in Canada so poor Margaret was very upset about the hospitalization until we assured her we were taking care of it. She said "but what can I give you to thank you, I have nothing but Jesus , so I will give you Jesus".!! The folk here are nearly all faithful Christians, the granny in the next bed was having her attendant read from a well worn Bible. This morning Bridget left at 0830 to get crutches and take Margaret home...it's 1200 and shee's not back yet...patience is something you had better have in Uganda as everything works in slow motion.

Well I'll end here, watch the slippery roads everyone .
Love from us both Liz and Theresa.

Further to my message of a few weeks ago re Sears L.D. telephone plan. I have since found out that in December 07, Sears changed their 'Easy Talk 1000' plan to 'Easy Talk 2000', thus doubling the amount of talk time for the same price $19.95/mo. There was no advice sent to regular Sears account holders. Apparently they did away with the 1000 minute plan. However in December 08, they reinstated the 'Easy Talk 1000' for $9.95/mo for new customers but did nothing for the unsuspecting customers who were still paying $19.95/mo.
Today, Sears have agreed to reimburse me for this overcharge, retroactive to Dec. 08. As I have two telephones under this plan it is a significant amount for me. They stated today that they were most anxious to resolve this problem with customers so anyone who has had the same experience may reach this department at 1-800-511-5111. Good luck. Adair

I was sad to hear that this may be the last year of the Gaspe Hawks basketball team. Many thanks To Pat for all of his hard work and dedication throught out he years.

I think that the idea of selling t-shirts is great and all former player should buy one.

Good luck to this years team, make the Hawk name proud.

To Winnie Fournier's family:

So sorry to hear of Winnie's passing. She was a dear soul and we enjoyed visiting with her when we went east to visit my Mom and Dad (Thomas and Esther Miller). Winnie had a gentle spirit and a great sense of humor and that made for a great combination.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
