Julia Baker passed away with her daughter, Lise, by her side after a brief fight with cancer in Wakefield, QC Saturday July 8.

Julia was born to Enid Miller (Wadsworth) and John Baker in beautiful Gaspe QC where she spent her formative years never far from the family hotels the Ash Inn and Baker Hotel. As the eldest child of a young mother with several children, the defining quality of a caregiver was instilled on her early in life. She developed a love of the piano at a young age and would oftentimes play for hotel patrons and school dances. She moved to Vancouver, BC with her family before returning alone to Gaspe where she married a pilot (Jean-Guy Arsenault) and had three children.

After moving to Quebec City in the early 1970's, with her husband stationed away for weeks at a time and with her parents and siblings on the west coast, she proved her resourcefulness and resilience. Regardless of distance, she always prioritized maintaining strong ties with family and friends through the years. She was warm and generous, and her house was always a welcoming gathering place for visitors and for her kids' friends.

When her marriage ended, she relocated to Montreal where she earned a certificate as a nurse's aid and became manager of a senior's residence (Borden Place) for 20 years, where she succeeded in creating a true sense of home. She remained in Montreal until 2019 when she moved to Aylmer, QC and resided at L'Initial, where she resumed playing piano for fellow residents several times a week.

Julia has been cremated and her remains will be interred in a private ceremony at Beechwood Cemetery. She will be deeply missed by her children Len (Amelia), David (Lucy) and Lise (Michel), her grandson Nathan and her siblings Lani (Baker Mitchell), Jay, Cory, Chris and Tim, her extended family and many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at L'Initial for their years of service and friendship. The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional physicians, nurses, personal support workers and volunteers at La Maison des Collines palliative care centre in Wakefield, QC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to La Maison Des Collines.

An informal gathering will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on July 29 at Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue.
To send flowers to the family of Julia Baker, please visit Tribute Store.

She was the dear sister of Sylvia, Arthur, Sandra and Darleen (Jacques) and the beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Joan lived in Moncton with her sister Sylvia for the last 26 years. She loved nature and took great delight in the birds that came to their feeders. She also had a keen interest in environmental issues. Joan attended St. George’s Anglican Church in Moncton and was a woman of strong faith. The family thanks Chris VanBuskirk who ministered to her at home and in hospital. There will be an internment of Joan’s ashes at St. John’s Anglican Church in Sandy Beach in the summer.

Keith Percival Harold Vibert
(May 23, 1932 – December 26, 2022)

“… stopping here to watch [the] woods fill up with snow.”
— Robert Frost

Peacefully with family by his side, generous, selfless and beloved Keith boarded the train for Heaven at 90 years young. He is predeceased by his parents Wilfred Vibert and Eva Bechervaise and his wife Mary Jensen. An ever-doting father, he is survived by his loving children Donald, Steve (Alice) and Tanya (Bruno) and his beautiful grandchildren Brayden and Emily, all of whom were his pride and joy. Over the years, siblings—Wilma, Kathleen, Weston (Joyce), Stan (Lise)—in-laws—Fredrick, Robert, Dorothy (Garold), Barbara (Frank), Betty (Brian), Katheryn (Paul), Karen (Kent)—many nephews and nieces, and countless friends, appreciated Keith’s caring, supportiveness, and quick-witted humour.

Along with his commitment to family, Keith made time to give back as an Anglican church warden and a school board commissioner for what is now the Eastern Shores School Board. An outdoorsman who enjoyed cross-country skiing and walks in the woods with his dog, be they filling up with snow in the winter or teeming with life in the spring, summer and fall, Keith maintained a love of travelling to visit family that mirrored his time working for CN Rail and VIA Rail. After his retirement, friends and neighbours knew that Spring had arrived when Keith and his welcoming smile, and a friendly wave, could be seen sitting on his veranda. A service and Celebration of Life to be held in Gaspé at a future date to be determined.

¬There is a new storyteller in the lounge car of the train. There are some familiar faces and new friends gathering around the consummate gentleman with the smirk on his face and a glimmer in his eye. There is love all around, and out the window, twilight is fading on the kind of night that would fill the woods with snow.

Enjoy your well-earned rest, Dad, and keep’em laughing. xoxo

Wednesday July 20 15:43:12 2022

Vilma Eileen McCallum Scott peacefully took her last breath at home surrounded by family on April 5, 2022, a few months before her 92nd birthday.
Vilma was born and raised a small town girl in Gaspe, Quebec on August 2, 1930 to Stanley and Ina (nee Miller) McCallum. Vilma met the love of her life while working as a teller at the TD Bank in Gaspe when a handsome young geologist working out of Murdochville came in to cash his pay cheque. They married soon after. Expanding her horizons, Vilma’s children were born in four different Canadian provinces and the family finally settled in Don Mills, Ontario. She was active in the community and in the lives of her children. Vilma was a stable presence at home while her husband, Fenton Scott, was often away pursuing his career in the mining industry. Their marriage was strong, stretching over 60 years until Fenton's death in 2011.
Vilma and Fenton raised three daughters and a son, as well as many cats and dogs and the occasional turtle or fish. After the death of her father, she began to follow the stock market and her financial acumen allowed her new freedom and opportunities. She bought herself an orange convertible sportscar as well as a beachfront property in St. George de Malbaie, to which she drove for many summers. She was passionate about her garden and the wildlife that visited her daily from nearby parks. She read the papers diligently, to stay apprised of finances, world affairs and politics. In recent years Vilma became a devoted Toronto Raptors fan.
Vilma was a kind and generous person. She was independent, strong willed and opinionated. She had an uncanny ability to elicit the life history of strangers shortly after meeting them. She was a feminist, raising her children to believe they could and should do whatever they wanted. Once her children were in high school Vilma took university courses and went back to work. Her family and friends will especially miss her stories. She remembered her life in amazing detail.
Vilma will be sorely missed by her family: her brother Alton McCallum, daughters Dawn (Michael Harris), Sharon Jo (Jabu Bell), Jill (Peter Walker); son Graeme; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kate, John, Chris, Evie, Dani, Rebecca, Stanley and Mitchell. and her great grandchildren Roman and Orion. She will also be missed by her nephews in Gaspe; Ron, Dave and Brian McCallum and her nieces Jane and Heather and her nephew Michael Scott from New Brunswick. Her cat Rosie is bereft.
Throughout her life Gaspe remained the one place on Earth that Vilma loved and longed for wherever she lived. Vilma will be buried in Sandy Beach on August 6th at 2 pm, Reverend Cindy Patterson will be presiding. A celebration of life will follow at the family home in Sandy Beach.

Our much beloved Edna Thompson Cunning slipped away to her eternal home at 1:12 this morning in Gaspe Hospital.

Her wish on leaving hospital at end of Oct 2021 was to receive care at home. Thank you to everyone on the care team, to remarkably helpful long-time friends and neighbours and to the many community members who made that possible. Your prayers, generous gifts of food, visits, calls and the Grace of God made it possible to fulfill that wish.

Edna remained in Haldimand at her house with home care for four and a half months. She had to be in hospital for just four and a half hours.

At this point no funeral plans have been given.

May Edna rest in peace and rise in glory.

In Loving Memory
Sybil Reida Palmer
1923-2022

On Saturday, February 19, 2022, one day short of her 99th birthday, Sybil Palmer (Nanny) passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home in Ajax, Ontario. A beloved matriarch, Sybil was the foundation that kept the family close over the many wonderful years of her life. Even though she was 99 we were all still shocked that she passed away. A testament to the long, vibrant and healthy life that Nanny led. Her last night with us was spent with a cross country zoom birthday celebration in her honour. A fitting finale for a woman who’s family was everything to her.

A formidable knitter, Nanny has left a trail of cherished hats, blankets, dishcloths, sweaters and teddy bears across North America. Anyone fortunate to visit her home would have also been provided (likely very fresh) homemade bread or buns, and if near Christmas, world-famous ginger snaps and shortbread. An Olympic caliber walker, the sidewalks of Ajax will miss Nanny's daily, multi-km walks. Also missing Nanny will be the Village Senior's Centre where she was known as Sybil and likely the centre of the Senior's Centre grapevine.

Shortly after the second world war, Sybil met Weston, the love of her life, and they were married in 1946. They raised their loving family in Murdochville, a small mining town on the Gaspe. After many years apart, they are finally reunited.

Sybil is survived by a robust family whose photos adorned both her sitting room and bedroom and pretty much all available wall and dresser space. Loving mother to: Dinah (Richard), Brent (Ree), Scotty (Susie), Lana (late Tony). Devoted grandmother to: Troy (Connie), Dwayne (Wendy), Rick (Leslie), Rocky (Lindsay), Ryan (Vero), Maureen (John) and Jason (Ashley). Sybil was also blessed with seven Great-grandchildren: Paige, Aidan, Connor, Abbey, Sierra, Braelyn, and Ezra. And many in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Sybil was born in 1923 in New Carlisle, Quebec, the fourth child of thirteen to Wilson and Ada Scott. Sybil was pre-deceased by siblings: Elvin, Edna (Jerry), Percy, Sammy (Audrey), Frank (Ruth), Minnie (Ken) and Pauline (Gary). She is survived by: Mary (Gerald), Paul, Ethel (Tom), Marge (Bob), Gerald (Freda).

We loved Nanny, mom, Sybil very much and will miss her more than words can say. A celebration of life will be held at the Village Seniors Centre (29 Linton Ave, Ajax, ON L1T 3A7) on Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 2-4pm. A funeral service will be held in Gaspe, QC the week of July 25th. If you are going to be in Gaspe that week I’m sure you will hear about the details but we will also post it on Facebook.

If you knew Sybil and would like to leave a message for the family her online obituary can be found here https://www.arbormemorial.ca/mceachnie/obituaries/sybil-reida-palmer/79746

MERILYN NORMA RUTH "MING" MILLER November 2, 1932 -  November 6, 2020

Merilyn passed away peacefully on Friday, November 6, 2020 after a brief struggle with COVID-19. Merilyn was the beloved wife of 67 years to Russell and loving mother of Nancy (Joe) Williams, Rick, and Andrew (Lana Phillips).

Merilyn was also the proud Nana of Katrina (Raphael), Jennifer (Scott), Jonathan, Danielle (Kyle), Ryan and Brandon, and Great Nana of Violet, Adelyne, Charlotte, Leo and Isla. Merilyn was also the darling sister of late Leigh (Marjorie) Coffin, Myrna (late Rick) Landers, late Sandy (late Kathy) Coffin, and affectionate aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Merilyn and her twin brother Leigh were born in Farewell Cove, Gaspé, Québec in 1932 to Alec and Dolly (Boyle) Coffin. Tragically, Dolly passed away shortly after their birth, and their aunt Marion helped her brother raise the infant twins.

Once finished high school, Merilyn moved to Montréal where she met Russell, a handsome young man also from Gaspé, who would soon be her husband.

Merilyn and Russell lived for many years in Murdochville, Quebec, eventually moving to Ottawa, where she greatly enjoyed working at the Canadian War Museum Archives.

Following retirement Merilyn volunteered with several organizations including the Council on Aging of Ottawa, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and was a therapeutic cuddler of premature newborns for whom she also knit tiny hats.

Throughout her life, Merilyn had the great pleasure of keeping in touch with a vast network of family and friends. She was always drawn back to the Gaspé, where her family roots were deep and broad.

We are all treasuring the memories of Merilyn’s hugs, smiles, and laugh. She worked hard to be a supportive partner to Russell and to make sure her children had a safe and nurturing home. She was a vital part of all her six grandchildren’s lives, and she was overjoyed at the birth of each of her five great-grandchildren.

A burial will be held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Sunnybank at a later date.

Helen Labbe Vuolo, daughter of Bea and Moise Labbe of Gaspe, passed away in Winter Park, Florida on 11/07/2016. She is survived by her son Richard de Montebello, who
now resides in Virginia, brother John-Paul Labbe who lives in Remouski and Edward who lives in Montreal and God knows how many cousins, nieces and nephews. She would have been 92 on April 19th. She loved bowling, dog racing and watching Phil Mickleson play golf. When she was a teenager, she and her aunt went and worked at an exclusive fishing camp in Ontario. One of the patrons she served for 10 days was a famous celebrity. All the other waitresses said to her, "Don't you know who that is? He's a famous writer." My mother admitted that she didn't read English novels and didn't know him. When the son of this famous American writer caught a trout, my mother cooked it for him and he said that she had "a million dollar smile." The writer was Ernest Hemingway. He gave her a $10 tip when he left, which in those Depression Era days was a lot of money.

I take solace knowing that mom is with my father and her family and having a ball in Heaven. Those people really knew how to throw a party!

It is with a heavy heart that I write this announcement about our dear mother Elizabeth Coffin (Betty Stanley), who passed away at Lisaard House Hospice in Cambridge Ontario, on July 15, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer- not her first fight with this disease. But this fight was long and painful, so seeing her leave us was not as difficult as we would have thought. Yes she will be missed by all who knew her and the world has lost a very generous kind woman.
Jane will take her remains to Gaspe the end of July for her final resting place beside her late husband (Stanford Stanley-1994) Mom has requested no fuss, she wishes to just be laid to rest without a service or viewing, so her wishes at this time will be honored, but please take a few minutes on July 19th to think of her as it would have been her 84th birthday.I know we all have fond memories of her. Thursday August 20 1:05:03 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very fine man. Ralph Vibert, 74, died peacefully in hospital on Friday August 14th, 2015 with his loving partner Mabel at his side.

Throughout his lengthy battle with cancer, Ralph never complained but instead helped distract us from the pain of seeing him wither by continuing on optimistically in his polite and humble way; he was a brave gentleman until the very end.

Born and raised in Wakeham, Ralph apprenticed under his father Fred as a machinist and carried on the family business after he was predeceased early in life by his mother Annie (nee Sullivan) and soon afterward by his father. Despite these early losses, Ralph went on to become a much respected and talented tradesman, known throughout Gaspe for his friendly demeanor, for his machining proficiency and—for those who knew him closely—for his lively stories and vivid recollections of the history of Gaspe’s people, places and mechanical things of all sorts—especially old cars. His body failed him but his brilliant mind never did!

Ralph is survived, missed, and lovingly remembered by his partner and best friend Mabel Carter (nee Coffin), her three sons, Mark, Craig (Susan) and Blake, and by his many life-long friends and neighbours.

A celebration of Ralph’s life will be held at Fortin Funeral Home, Gaspe, Quebec on Saturday, September 12, 2015 beginning at 1pm.

Internment of Ralph’s ashes next to his parents’ gravesite in Wakeham will occur at a later date in a private ceremony.

VERNON LEWIS COFFIN
June 18, 1936 – June 22, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband and loving father Vernon Lewis Coffin after a courageous battle with cancer. Dad died on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Mississauga Trillium Hospital surrounded by love and in the arms of his family.

He will always be cherished and remembered by his loving wife of 58 years Joan, his beloved children Heather, Dale (Cris), Morgan and Tracey (Dieter). He was also the very proud “Grampy” to Shannon, Leah, Matthew, Nicholas, Jamie, Danielle and Colton.

Born in L’Anse aux Cousins (Gaspe) Quebec, Vernon was the son of the late Herbert and Evelyn Coffin. He is survived and remembered fondly by his sisters Betty, Nona and Evelene and was pre-deceased by his brothers Raymond, Murray and sister Marjorie.

Vernon built an astonishing career in the mining industry where he began as an underground miner at Gaspe Copper Mines and progressed up the ladder with Noranda until he retired after 48 years as Project & Reclamation Director. He then went on to build a successful and rewarding consulting business and was involved with developing several mine projects. His passion and love, however, was admiring his grandchildren as they grew in life and provided endless moments of pleasure and pride.

A service celebrating Vernon’s life was held in Mississauga, Ontario, on Friday June 27. Interment will be held in Gaspe, Quebec at a later date.Donations can be made in Vernon’s memory to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Saturday April 16 17:49:24 2011

I will never say goodbye to you my Father
cause I know this is not the end for us to see each other.
You will only be going to a place where there’s no pain nor suffering.
I am happy for you, for you will be with God.
For now we need to go in separate ways.
I remember how your arms held me and gave me strength.
You were always there to listen, love, and defend me in everything.
You were my very best friend, dad.
You were always proud of me no matter what.
I’m very grateful and proud to call you my dad.
Here deep inside my heart you’ll always be.
I would give up everything I have just to hug you one more time.
I remember the last time I talked to you on the phone, you were so sad.
If only I could turn back the time I would have never let you hang up the phone.
I felt the world stop and my heart stopped beating when they told me you’re gone…….
How I wish I was only dreaming.
Just like the rain; tears fell down from my eyes, I couldn’t speak for a while.
Dad I want to tell you something.
Thank you Dad….
For always listening, caring, and loving me and most of all… giving me life.
The greatest gift God gave me was YOU…….. my Dad…
It’s difficult to let you go but I must…
I must return the gift God gave me…
Till then;
See you in Heaven………

CUNNING- Rowena (Baker)

Our dear mother, Rowena Cunning, died in Montreal on Feb. 15, 2011 in her 98th year. Wife of the late Charles Cunning to whom she was married for over 57 years. Born in Gaspe on 27 October, 1913, she was the daughter of Ralph & Winnifred Baker and a great-grandchild of Grammie Eagle & Henry Eagle. Rowena had a great memory and one of those memories was of her great-grandmother. Rowena lived the first half of her life in Gaspe but in the later years she spent the winter months in Montreal. However, she always went back to her home in Gaspe for the summer. Her family has been left with many memories to treasure.

Rowena is survived by her five children, Sylvia (Chudleigh), Arthur (Patricia), Joan (Brian - deceased), Sandra (Levi) and Darleen (Jacques), 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Eileen Pero. She was pre-deceased by her five brothers.

In Memoriam

BRIAND, Victor - In loving memory of our Husband, Dad and Grandpa who passed away last year on February 10, 2010.

I miss your laugh, I miss your smile. Each day I am reminded of your love of family and nature. I know that tears would have broken your heart, so I try to smile and see the beauty in each day as you would have. Love always, Sheila

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die". Painfully missed but forever loved by Lilou, Axel, Olivier, and Patti.

Dad, we will always remember everything you did for us. Coming to our special events, bringing surprises to make us smile, and just calling to say Hello! Our challenges were lessened due to your unwavering support. You gave so much to so many and asked for so little in return. We can only try to make a positive difference in our world as you did. Love you forever, Cindy, Ray, Kristine, Ali and Andy

Thursday November 16th 1967 to Wednesday November 3rd 2010
My best friend was taken from us after a year long battle with cancer.
May she find peace now in heaven with all of our angels that have gone before her.

Lil. REMEMBER WHEN ?

Remember when you and I would play dress up...we could hardly wait to be all grown up?  I wish we could be kids again.
We had so much fun just being us.
Remember when we would lay on our backs by the big old rose bush and watch the clouds?
Remember when we would sit up in your father's truck on Sunday mornings cleaning it,how we would talk about everything we did and everything we would do when we were all grown up?
Remember when we would sit in that old rowboat and play then we would jump in the pool and pretend that we were swimming in the Great Lakes?
Remember when we took your Nana's sugar dish out to the wood shed and ate all that rhubarb until our stomachs were so sore?
Remember when we all played in the old barn up in the hay loft?
We had so much fun growing up.
Remember fishing in the old brook? Going cross country skiing and sliding on Delbert's hill? How about the Race Track? Remember that?
Then we were teenagers...we made dandelion wine and beer. Had crazy fun parties in the kitchen. Remember the roast...how your Nana was so mad at us because the dogs ate it and we never even noticed?
We had so many good times back then.
Remember when I told you I was moving away and we promised to each other that we always would be BEST friends? Well your still my best friend and I love you like a sister and just because your "gone away" we'll still be best friends.  I will run through the clouds with you someday just like I ran through the grassy fields with you then. Remember Lillian just remember...I promise.

OBITUARIES:

PATTERSON: Donald
MILLER: Linda

In Gaspe, on March 20, 2010 Donald Patterson, age 74, passed away following a brief illness. Six weeks later, on May 2, 2010, his wife Linda Miller, passed away after a short battle with cancer, at the age of 70 years.
Life-long companions and soul mates, the couple married on May 30, 1956. They then settled in Sunny Bank, started a family and devoted themselves to their family and friends. Donald worked for 34 years for Gaspe Elementary School where he drove the school bus, and in his later years became janitor. Linda was a homemaker who worked hard at home and gave her endless love and devotion to her family. Together, they enjoyed the simple things life had to offer, like their car drives around the River, their coffee breaks, family gatherings, vacations and holidays. They were always seen together wherever they went.
They leave to mourn their three children: one daughter, Krista (Earl Assels), and two sons, Lowell (Heather) and Blake (Nadine). Loving grandparents to Jaime, Erin (Shawn), Darcy (Ashley), Jonah (Annick) and Dayna. They also leave behind their siblings, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Tuesday April 20 14:55:18 2010

Why
Dad,
Why did you chose to die?
You left no note and me with why?
You thought you were doing what was best and right.
Why, oh why, did you have to end the fight?
Your pain is something I will never understand.
You must have been so afraid to take this stand.
You left me with a title I am sad to attain.
Suicide Survivor, but who should I blame?
I know your decision was painful to make.
The thoughts in your head
Must have been unbearable to take.
Now that you're gone, I think of you a lot.
You couldn't have known the suffering this has brought.
I pray you are at peace my Angel, and I am in pain.
I count the minutes to Heaven and seeing you again.

I can honestly say Dad now I understand why…
You lived all those years with that guilt and pain
and we all just thought you were shy…
when there really was someone else actually to blame.
Someone who took something from you…
Something that could never be returned.
But God will see to it, that from this
We will all learn…

You loved life that’s plain to see…
As you were always among the wildlife and trees…
Nature was what kept you going day by day right to the end
Watching nature’s innocence and new life begin.
Yes, I believe that is what helped you right to the end

The end and change was something you never liked…
Ending a phone call, a visit or even a fight
No you never liked the end.
So this is why I had trouble to figure all of this out…
But now I feel without a doubt…
This was not the end…
Some day we will all be together once again...

Thursday May 28 9:45:24 2009

Patterson, Maynard H. "Pat" Age 93, of Roseville died on May 20 after a brief illness. He was a lion of a man who will not be forgotten by any who knew him. Maynard was born on February 24, 1916, in a remote village of Gaspe, Quebec. His father was a woodsman and fisherman, and the family used a horse or dogsled for transportation. Maynard excelled in everything he undertook. After his father's untimely death when Maynard was 7 years old, he earned his keep with relatives during the summers by tending their gardens, where his hard work and attentiveness made him a welcome visitor. Upon taking his first fulltime job as a messenger boy at AT&T headquarters in New York in order to support his mother and sister, he was quickly promoted to page in the office of the president who, impressed with his young employee's acumen and diligence, arranged for Maynard to receive a full scholarship to Lehigh University. Maynard never forgot that gift, passing it along to others whom he assisted in obtaining education or employment. After earning his B.S. in metallurgical engineering, he was employed by Crucible Steel Company, where he supervised the forging of battleship gun barrels and other critical ordnance. In his later years, he reminisced about the romance of this job more than any other. He soon joined the U. S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. Rising to the rank of Captain, he served at the Philadelphia Ordnance Depot, distinguishing himself as chief of the Tank-Automotive branch, responsible for production and shipping of tanks for the European theater. His commanding officer thought so highly of him that he convinced Maynard to come to work for him at Canadian Durex Abrasives in Brantford, Ontario after the war as chief engineer and Secretary. When Durex became part of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Maynard became Vice President, General Manager and Director of 3M Canada. During the 25-year span of his 3M career, Maynard rose to the position of Vice President and General Manager of all 3M international operations. He was elected to the 3M board of directors in 1965. He traveled extensively throughout the world, exploring market opportunities and opening 3M subsidiaries in 14 countries. At the time of his death, he was the last living person to serve in an executive capacity with 3M founder William McKnight. Maynard retired from 3M in 1971 and with his wife, the former Irma Lanterman, built his dream home on Big Bass Lake in northern Minnesota, where they lived until 2006. A passionate outdoorsman, he knew every inch of his woods, where he hunted grouse and deer. Maynard was an avid fisherman, a sport he and Irma enjoyed together for many years. (Irma would like to add that she always outfished him.) He made annual fishing trips to Canada with Irma, son Bruce and friends Dan Peterson and Boyce Hardy, stocking the family freezer with walleye and northern. Maynard was also an accomplished cabinetmaker, furnishing the lake house with many beautiful and finely made pieces. His mind was as active as his hands, driven by an ongoing curiosity about world events, new technologies, and the behavior of the fauna and flora inhabiting his property. In addition to Irma, Maynard is survived by his sister, Audrey Mullison of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Donna Long; sons, Brian (Denise Wilder), Steven, and Bruce (Mari Zarcone); grandchildren, Douglas Patterson, Becca Justiniano, David Long, Jeffrey Patterson, and Alexander McHugh; and four great-grandchildren. I was saddened to hear that Fred Sams had passed, and would like to offer my condolences to Hayden and other family members. I will always remember the many Novembers he and a group of other veterans visited Gaspe Elementary School to educate our young students on the sacrifices so many had made for the Canadian cause to World Peace. He was always so patient and understanding as he answered their questions. His concern and interest in their efforts to celebrate Remembrance Day so evident in his smile. He will be missed by many!

She was always so kind to me, and I loved her for that. I remember visiting her so often as a child with my mother. My mother loved her and I was lucky enough to spend time with her as a kid to feel that love. I had the pleasure of staying with her when Nan was home there years ago, it sure took me back, it was a real treat to experience the close friendship those two women had. She was easy to talk to, she was always so understanding. I have missed her for a long time and now that she is gone I'm sure Gaspe will miss her too! Rest in peace, Aunt Ruby.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Wallace McAfee. I remember when he and Nelson Phillips worked at the rink at Farewell Cove in the winter. They worked very hard to keep the snow off and the ice flooded. Wallace was always friendly even when the shack was crowded with a noisy teenagers, and he would even come out on the ice once in a while to play goalie for us.
I remember him even more, when a few years later, we worked at the Gourmet Salmon Lodge on the York River. Wallace and Ada were incredible, cooking and feeding the guides as well as cooking and cleaning for the guests. It all seems like yesterday, sitting at the guides table in that tiny kitchen with Doug and Steven and Jack and Whitney and Frank[my Dad]. It didn't matter how hot it was in there Wallace never looked or acted frustrated. He always had a joke and was always fun to be around.
God Bless
