OBITUARIES:

PATTERSON: Donald
MILLER: Linda

In Gaspe, on March 20, 2010 Donald Patterson, age 74, passed away following a brief illness. Six weeks later, on May 2, 2010, his wife Linda Miller, passed away after a short battle with cancer, at the age of 70 years.
Life-long companions and soul mates, the couple married on May 30, 1956. They then settled in Sunny Bank, started a family and devoted themselves to their family and friends. Donald worked for 34 years for Gaspe Elementary School where he drove the school bus, and in his later years became janitor. Linda was a homemaker who worked hard at home and gave her endless love and devotion to her family. Together, they enjoyed the simple things life had to offer, like their car drives around the River, their coffee breaks, family gatherings, vacations and holidays. They were always seen together wherever they went.
They leave to mourn their three children: one daughter, Krista (Earl Assels), and two sons, Lowell (Heather) and Blake (Nadine). Loving grandparents to Jaime, Erin (Shawn), Darcy (Ashley), Jonah (Annick) and Dayna. They also leave behind their siblings, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services were held on March 24, 2010 for Donald, and May 7, 2010 for Linda, followed by a private burial for both on May 8, 2010 at York Cemetery.
They will be sadly missed by all that knew them. May they rest in peace together, forever.

Why
Dad,
Why did you chose to die?
You left no note and me with why?
You thought you were doing what was best and right.
Why, oh why, did you have to end the fight?
Your pain is something I will never understand.
You must have been so afraid to take this stand.
You left me with a title I am sad to attain.
Suicide Survivor, but who should I blame?
I know your decision was painful to make.
The thoughts in your head
Must have been unbearable to take.
Now that you're gone, I think of you a lot.
You couldn't have known the suffering this has brought.
I pray you are at peace my Angel, and I am in pain.
I count the minutes to Heaven and seeing you again.

I can honestly say Dad now I understand why…
You lived all those years with that guilt and pain
and we all just thought you were shy…
when there really was someone else actually to blame.
Someone who took something from you…
Something that could never be returned.
But God will see to it, that from this
We will all learn…

You loved life that’s plain to see…
As you were always among the wildlife and trees…
Nature was what kept you going day by day right to the end
Watching nature’s innocence and new life begin.
Yes, I believe that is what helped you right to the end

The end and change was something you never liked…
Ending a phone call, a visit or even a fight
No you never liked the end.
So this is why I had trouble to figure all of this out…
But now I feel without a doubt…
This was not the end…
Some day we will all be together once again...

Thursday May 28 9:45:24 2009
Patterson, Maynard H. "Pat" Age 93, of Roseville died on May 20 after a brief illness. He was a lion of a man who will not be forgotten by any who knew him. Maynard was born on February 24, 1916, in a remote village of Gaspe, Quebec. His father was a woodsman and fisherman, and the family used a horse or dogsled for transportation. Maynard excelled in everything he undertook. After his father's untimely death when Maynard was 7 years old, he earned his keep with relatives during the summers by tending their gardens, where his hard work and attentiveness made him a welcome visitor. Upon taking his first fulltime job as a messenger boy at AT&T headquarters in New York in order to support his mother and sister, he was quickly promoted to page in the office of the president who, impressed with his young employee's acumen and diligence, arranged for Maynard to receive a full scholarship to Lehigh University. Maynard never forgot that gift, passing it along to others whom he assisted in obtaining education or employment. After earning his B.S. in metallurgical engineering, he was employed by Crucible Steel Company, where he supervised the forging of battleship gun barrels and other critical ordnance. In his later years, he reminisced about the romance of this job more than any other. He soon joined the U. S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. Rising to the rank of Captain, he served at the Philadelphia Ordnance Depot, distinguishing himself as chief of the Tank-Automotive branch, responsible for production and shipping of tanks for the European theater. His commanding officer thought so highly of him that he convinced Maynard to come to work for him at Canadian Durex Abrasives in Brantford, Ontario after the war as chief engineer and Secretary. When Durex became part of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Maynard became Vice President, General Manager and Director of 3M Canada. During the 25-year span of his 3M career, Maynard rose to the position of Vice President and General Manager of all 3M international operations. He was elected to the 3M board of directors in 1965. He traveled extensively throughout the world, exploring market opportunities and opening 3M subsidiaries in 14 countries. At the time of his death, he was the last living person to serve in an executive capacity with 3M founder William McKnight. Maynard retired from 3M in 1971 and with his wife, the former Irma Lanterman, built his dream home on Big Bass Lake in northern Minnesota, where they lived until 2006. A passionate outdoorsman, he knew every inch of his woods, where he hunted grouse and deer. Maynard was an avid fisherman, a sport he and Irma enjoyed together for many years. (Irma would like to add that she always outfished him.) He made annual fishing trips to Canada with Irma, son Bruce and friends Dan Peterson and Boyce Hardy, stocking the family freezer with walleye and northern. Maynard was also an accomplished cabinetmaker, furnishing the lake house with many beautiful and finely made pieces. His mind was as active as his hands, driven by an ongoing curiosity about world events, new technologies, and the behavior of the fauna and flora inhabiting his property. In addition to Irma, Maynard is survived by his sister, Audrey Mullison of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Donna Long; sons, Brian (Denise Wilder), Steven, and Bruce (Mari Zarcone); grandchildren, Douglas Patterson, Becca Justiniano, David Long, Jeffrey Patterson, and Alexander McHugh; and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements private. Twin Cities Cremation 612-866-6711

I was saddened to hear that Fred Sams had passed, and would like to offer my condolences to Hayden and other family members. I will always remember the many Novembers he and a group of other veterans visited Gaspe Elementary School to educate our young students on the sacrifices so many had made for the Canadian cause to World Peace. He was always so patient and understanding as he answered their questions. His concern and interest in their efforts to celebrate Remembrance Day so evident in his smile. He will be missed by many!

Sincere sympathies are extended to the family of Fred Sams. He was truly unforgettable and happy memories go back to 1973 when Fred and Mally were managing the Ash Inn and I had just moved there to begin a 30+ years career on the Gaspé coast. Each meeting with Fred was always a unique occasion be it at the Legion, Fort Haldimand Camp, or on election and referendum campaigns. He was involved in everything and contributed enormously to the community. A loyal and proud Canadian who always had a funny story to tell and a twinkle in his eye. Steve Tribble - Sherbrooke, Québec

Dear Nanny (Pauline {coffin} Patterson)

Nanny you were the greatest women I've ever met. You were loving, caring, compassionate and everything everyone should be. No one could have ever met you and not had you touch their life in a warm way. I can't imagine life without you, I know I have too now that you are gone, but I cant seem to grasp the idea of it. I would be ever so lucky to be even half the woman you were. You brought so much joy to my life and happiness and that alone makes me a better person
I love you Nanny, you will forever be in my heart, I love you so much

Love your granddaughter Kiley Cynthia Boyle

On Friday, October 10, 2008, Jill, beloved wife of Herbert for 61 years,
ascended into the welcoming arms of her loving parents Napoleon and Odile (Hamon) Thibault of Barachois, Quebec. Also waiting for their beloved sister were her brothers Vincent (Rose), Yvon (Judy), Henri (Marg), and
Donat (Lily). Jill was the much-loved mother of Jackie(Theresa) and the adored grandmother of Jean-Paul and Jesse. Remaining to celebrate her life are Jill’s sisters Raymonde (Ernest) Jean, Rolande (Ernest) Sarrazin, Yvette (Fortunat) Poirier, and Rita (George) Hayes and her brother Hilaire (Judy). Jill was the loving aunt of many nieces and nephews, a beloved in-law to many brothers and sisters, and a faithful friend to many people in her neighbourhood. My sincere condolences to all the family of Aunt Ruby. I was sad to hear of her passing, she gave me many wonderful memories of her, I still hear her rich chuckle. She was always so kind to me, and I loved her for that. I remember visiting her so often as a child with my mother. My mother loved her and I was lucky enough to spend time with her as a kid to feel that love. I had the pleasure of staying with her when Nan was home there years ago, it sure took me back, it was a real treat to experience the close friendship those two women had. She was easy to talk to, she was always so understanding. I have missed her for a long time and now that she is gone I'm sure Gaspe will miss her too! Rest in peace, Aunt Ruby.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Wallace McAfee. I remember when he and Nelson Phillips worked at the rink at Farewell Cove in the winter. They worked very hard to keep the snow off and the ice flooded. Wallace was always friendly even when the shack was crowded with a noisy teenagers, and he would even come out on the ice once in a while to play goalie for us.
I remember him even more, when a few years later, we worked at the Gourmet Salmon Lodge on the York River. Wallace and Ada were incredible, cooking and feeding the guides as well as cooking and cleaning for the guests. It all seems like yesterday, sitting at the guides table in that tiny kitchen with Doug and Steven and Jack and Whitney and Frank[my Dad]. It didn't matter how hot it was in there Wallace never looked or acted frustrated. He always had a joke and was always fun to be around.

We are saddened by the passing away on Sunday, April 27th, 2008, at the
Gaspe Sanatorium, of my 105 year old aunt Daisy Davis-Patterson. Having travelled to Gaspe from Halifax, N.S., this past March, we are grateful to have had the opportunity of visiting her twice during our stay. Aunt Daisy was still very alert, recognized us and even carried out a good conversation with us. At her age, and being concerned with her attire, she made sure, the day being a Sunday, that she had her brooch pinned on and her hair was well combed and set. Aunt Daisy had a good life and we will miss her greatly. S.
