Successful Lawsuit Against the Police
We, the family of Hoyt Stewart, Hartley, Pat, Darrell, and Trina were greatly releived that the reputation of their son and brother has been protected. On May 21, 1999, Hoyt's body was discovered at 7:50 AM in his bed. He died peacefully in his sleep.
On June 26, 2001 we settled out of court with a lawsuit against the police, particularily Dany Smith of the Gaspe detachment. The reason for the lawsuit is thaty Dany Smith was given an assignment to relate a message to ourselves telling us that the police in Gaspe received a message from the police in Hamilton, ON, that Hoyt had died and the cause was "unknown." Unfortunately we were out of town. Mr. Smith was given the telephone number of an uncle of Hoyt's living in Montreal. He then called and neglegently gave information which he thought to be reliable, telling him that Hoyt had escaped from prison and hanged himself. This unfortuneate error spread quickly through Gaspe.
We are all releived that we can rest our case with the Lord, and may our son and brother rest peacefully.
Pat Stewart.
