IMG_8976 - Our neighbourhood in Lapad. We had a morning tour of the Old Town and then a free afternoon to wander.

IMG_8977 - Lapad Bay from our Hotel Kompas. The local bus went to the Old Town every half hour.

IMG_8978 - Out Lapad Bay to Otočić (Islet) Grebeni, with its lighthouse that marks the Lapad/Babin Kuk Peninsula.

IMG_8980 - The Pile (pronounced Peel'-eh) Gate entrance to the Old Town. After 500 years, the walls got to this form in the 17th century.

IMG_8981 - This old town, like many ancient ones, is of a very walkable size, with a wide main street and narrow local ones.

IMG_8982 - St. Clair Convent Orphanage, Zlatarić St, 1432. Unwanted babies were put on a rotating platform in the window, and received and cared for by nuns inside.

IMG_8983 - This street, officially Placa, is known as the Stradun. The clock tower at the east end is by the Sponza Palace.

IMG_8984 - Back at the western, Pile Gate end is another landmark tower, that of the Franciscan Monastery.

IMG_8985 - An earthquake and fire destroyed the city in 1667. It was reconstructed in the baroque style that has survived to this day.

IMG_8986 - The narrow street ahead is Boškovićeva. In the 2nd store up its steps, is the "Iron Throne" of "The Game of Thrones".

IMG_8987 - On the 1st floor: shop. 2nd: living rooms. 3rd: bedrooms. Loft: kitchen and bathroom so wastewater siphoned well.

IMG_8989 - The Sponza Palace has an interior courtyard. Built in 1516 in gothic and Renaissance style, it survived the 1667 earthquake.
